The Best Day Trips to Ourzazate

Ourzazat is about 250 km from Marrakech so the trip must start at dawn. The first stop will be
at a Berber village, and the second one at the top of the Tizi’n Tishka pass which has an
elevation of 2260 meters. E then proceed to visit the ancient fortified village or kasbah of Aït
Benhaddou, a UNESCO Heritage of Humanity site, where we will have lunch.
We then continue on to Ouarzazat, a city surrounded by the desert at the junction point of two
amazing valleys, the valley of Draa and the valley of Dades. The city in the past owed its
importance to being a trading post between the north and the south, while today its
importance is related to the movie industry. In fact it is known as the Hollywood of Africa
thanks to its movie recording studios, where movies such as Mission Cleopatra, Gladiator,
Asterix and Obelix, Kundun, Tea in the Sahara, Babel and Lawrence of Arabia have been
filmed.
Ouarzazat also boasts an outstanding kasbah, the Kasbah Taourirt, a UNESCO Heritage of
Humanity site, of major relevance for its architecture and decorations. Accross from the kasbah
you can find the Movie Museum, built in the year 2007.
In the month of June the city hosts the National Festial of Tazenakht area rugs, handmad
masterpieces featuring elegant geometrical minimalist patterns.

THE TOP THINGS TO DO AND SEE IN OURZAZATE

Taourirt Kasbah

Unlike other Glaoui kasbahs, Taourirt escaped ruin by moonlighting as a Hollywood backdrop (Sheltering Sky, Gladiator, Prince of Persia) and attracting the attention of Unesco, which has carefully restored small sections of the inner sanctum. Follow the maze of stairwells to the top floor, where you’ll find a prayer room through keyhole archways, traces of stucco and an original tataoui ceiling.

La Kasbah des Sables

Conceived by owner Brigitte Babolat, this Moorish fantasy palace – a medley of cosy lounges and nooks arranged around a series of patios – took three years to create. The centerpiece is an enormous shallow pool backed by a wall of jewel-coloured lights and surrounded by romantic, candle-lit tables where you are served a mix of Moroccan and French dishes such as barbot and saffron or chicken with Atlas morels.

Habous

Overlooking the lively square at the epicentre of Ouarzazate, Habous is the most popular place in town. It has a patisserie, cafe and restaurant, with plenty of outdoor seating for taking in life on the square. The restaurant side (third building on the right) serves up salads, brochettes, sandwiches, pastas and pizzas, plus steaks and gratin dishes at reasonable prices.

Atlas Film Corporation Studios

The first ‘Ouallywood’ studio, established by Mohammed Belghimi in 1983, displays sets and props from movies filmed here, including Jewel of the Nile, Kingdom of Heaven and Kundun. Guided tours run every 20 to 40 minutes and take you through some of the stages, sets and workshops incorporated in the 150 hectare site. And who knows, you may even get discovered by a talent scout.

Horizon Artisanat

Henna-painted pottery, hand-painted tea glasses, and silver filigree rings are sold at reasonable fixed prices, supporting Horizon’s programs to provide vocational training for adults with disabilities and integrate disabled children and adults into the community. The association supports some 2500 people, including 53 permanent staff members.

Coopérative de Tissage

Our Review

Inside the Complexe Artisanal, glimpse women artisans at work (Monday to Friday) on hanbels and embroidered straw mats, and take one home at posted fixed prices (Dh550 to Dh1100 per sq metre).

Complexe Artisanal

Opposite the kasbah, this sprawling collection of state-run showrooms features elaborately woven tapestries, local stone carvings, inlaid daggers, metal lanterns and embroidered linens.

Marathon des Sables

This gruelling six-day, 250km desert ultramarathon changes course each year, and is revealed when runners converge in Ouarzazate.
