Ourzazat is about 250 km from Marrakech so the trip must start at dawn. The first stop will be
at a Berber village, and the second one at the top of the Tizi’n Tishka pass which has an
elevation of 2260 meters. E then proceed to visit the ancient fortified village or kasbah of Aït
Benhaddou, a UNESCO Heritage of Humanity site, where we will have lunch.
We then continue on to Ouarzazat, a city surrounded by the desert at the junction point of two
amazing valleys, the valley of Draa and the valley of Dades. The city in the past owed its
importance to being a trading post between the north and the south, while today its
importance is related to the movie industry. In fact it is known as the Hollywood of Africa
thanks to its movie recording studios, where movies such as Mission Cleopatra, Gladiator,
Asterix and Obelix, Kundun, Tea in the Sahara, Babel and Lawrence of Arabia have been
Ouarzazat also boasts an outstanding kasbah, the Kasbah Taourirt, a UNESCO Heritage of
Humanity site, of major relevance for its architecture and decorations. Accross from the kasbah
you can find the Movie Museum, built in the year 2007.
In the month of June the city hosts the National Festial of Tazenakht area rugs, handmad
masterpieces featuring elegant geometrical minimalist patterns.
