3 Day Trips to Merzouga

Merzouga is a small town out on the edge of the Sahara Desert of Erg Chebbi. Merzouga is only 20 km away from Algeria border where the paved road ends and the real Sahara Desert sand dunes begin. Merzouga desert is the most common destination in Morocco for Camel treks and Bivouacs. To experience the Sahara desert dunes it is a must to take a camel trip and stay overnight in a Berber tent or in a luxury camp. The camel trip takes approximately 1 hours 30 minutes through amazing red-orange sand dunes at sunset to reach the sahara desert camp where you will be served wonderful and rich dinner in the desert tent. But note it is at least a ten hours drive from the erg chebbi dunes to Marrakech. The trip is possible in 3 days however we recommend a slow pace over 4 or 5 days.

Tour Itinerary

Day 1: Marrakech - Aït Benhaddou - Dades Gorge

We depart from Marrakech early in the morning for a long roadtrip taking us through the
highest mountain pass in Morocco, the Tizi’n Tishka Pass, with 2,260 mt elevation. Here we will stop briefly to enjoy the amazing views of the surroundings.
We will then continue to visit la Kasbah of Aït Benhaddou, a UNESCO Heritage of Humanity site. The kasbah was built with the adobe tecnique in the 17th century alongside the most important commercial route at the time. We will have a traditional lunch in a restaurant nearby.
The trip then continues until we reach the Dades Gorge driving through the Roses Valley, a region featuring hectars and hectars of rose crops which make up the main source of income for the local population. In fact the roses’s essence is the main ingredient in the manufacturing of most fragrances.
We will dine and spend the night in a three-star hotel.

Day 2: Todra Gorge - Dades Gorge - Erg Chebbi Dunes

Right after breakfast we head towards the Merzouga desert driving through the Tinghir oasis and then through the amazing Todra Gorge a narrow valley bottom eroded in reddish soil with very high sides. We then venture on the Dades Gorge proceeding from the bottom to the top on a steep hairpin turns-loaded mountain road. At the very top we will be able to see an odd yet amazing geological formation resembling long fingers. We will have lunch at the only
restaurant of the area then the trip moves on to Erfoud, another area of geological significance rich in fossils.
Once we reach the desert’s limit we must leave behind the comfortable van and proceed on dromedary’s back for about two hours in order to reach out overnight accommodation, a Berber bivouac surrounded by sandy dunes. Watching the sun going down behind the highest sand dunes in Morocco will be an moment to cherish for a lifetime.

Day 3: Erg Chebbi Dunes- Rissani - Ouarzazat - Marrakech

Traditional breakfast will be prepared and enjoyed at the break of dawn watching the rising sun
from our Berber tent, while the dromedaries are getting ready to take us back to our van and
start the return trip to Marrakech. Today we will make a first stop in the holy city of Rissani,
where the current king’s dynasty originated, and a second stop in Ouarzazat, a desert city
famous for its Kasbah, its Cinema Museum, and its movie recording studios that won the city
the reputation of African Hollywood. Three hours driving and we plunge once again in chaotic
